Jewish Eco Seminars

Our Bread & Butter

Jewish Eco Seminars (JES) engages and educates the Jewish community by revealing the powerful connection between modern Israel, ecological innovation, and Jewish values.

We deliver dynamic, experiential educational programs to a wide range of Jews in Israel and North America and capitalize on the ecological awareness of many young Jews as a point of engagement for strengthening Jewish identity and Israel awareness. Since our founding, JES reached over 2,750 Jews on the dynamic connection between Judaism, ecology, and Israel.

Our Story

Jewish Eco Seminars (JES) was launched in June 2010 through the PresenTense Institute in the chair sponsored by The Jim Joseph Foundation. We emerged out of a successful 2008 pilot project of eight seminars for 140 Jewish educators in the greater San Francisco area. The project was implemented by Canfei Nesharim and the Bureau of Jewish Education, funded by the Gaia Fund, and initiated and managed by the founder of JES. Since then, we expanded. Why this matters

In a recent study among Americans, about 75% state that they are particularly concerned about helping the environment as they go about their daily lives. Yet, the study shows that only one-in-five Americans say they make an effort to live in ways that help protect the environment “all the time.” Our education and tour programs for Jewish groups in Israel address the most burning issues that excite our participants and create room to explore sustainable ways of living.

Our Goals

1. Engage and inspire young Jews to link Judaism with ecology and sustainability.

2. Create a multiplier effect by reaching Jewish educators at all levels of the community to teach in Jewish and Secular institutions.

3. Catalyze a Jewish response to the environmental crisis by capitalizing on the deeply rooted environmental interests of many Jews.
