Volunteer in a Jerusalem Community Garden

In recent years community gardens have emerged in many neighborhoods in which residents garden their own plots and grow vegetables and herbs which they harvest and eat. The educator will provide contextual information about the growth of this phenomenon, and root it in Jewish values and teachings combined with hands-on activities at the gardens.

In this program, participants will:

• Experience first-hand how young Israelis are engaging in tikkun olam in a community garden in Jerusalem

• Interact with young Israelis on National Service in an informal, outdoor setting and have fun doing so.

Possible Locations: One of the about 80 community gardens in Jerusalem

Time: Min. 1.5 Hours, excl. travel time to and from site

Program Suggested Timetable:

0:00-0:15 Introduction to the program. Meet with members of Garin U’dvash, a group of young Israelis on National Service, who will share about their project.
0:15-1:15 Volunteer with them in the community garden.
1:15-1:25 Introduction to Jewish sources on farming and agriculture.
1:25-1:45 Jewish learning in pairs followed by participatory discussion.
1:45-1:55 Presentation by the educator guide about the emergence of school gardens in
particular and Jewish environmental education in general in Israel today, and its significance in light of Jewish values.
1:55-2:00 Summary and concluding remarks by the educator guide.

Please note: for groups of more than 25 participants, half of the group will engage in the volunteer component while the other half participates in the Jewish eco learning. Then the groups will switch.
